This is the Speed Signal Conditioner and Speedometer Correction Unit.
The actual unit in the car is at the top, encapsulated (apart from the
mods!) in silicone to protect it from underbonnet conditions. The lower
unit is the same basic unit programmed for another use entirely, but showing
what is under all that silicone! The Signal Conditioner takes whatever
speed signal is available from the transmission and converts it to an analog
voltage from 0-5 volts, linearly related to speed. This signal is used
directly by the engine and gearbox management systems to determine road
speed. The speedo correction part takes this signal and converts it into
a pulse train suitable for the standard speedometer. It uses a small PIC-16
microcontroller which can be reprogrammed for different pulse train requirements,
and also the analog voltage can be calibrated, so making a versatile unit. |

This is a general view of the dashboard mods. The three-pod standard
instrument set has been replaced with a slightly more comprehensive set,
comprising an ammeter, mechanical (bourdon-tube) oil pressure gauge, and
a modified series-1 four-instrument cluster giving (clockwise from top
left) fuel gauge, battery voltage, coolant temperature and oil temperature. |

Here are some closeups of the gearshift switch.
It is a centre-biased lever switch which is simply pressed upwards for
upshift or downwards for downshift, is situated on the righthand side of
the steering column just below the wheel, and has proven very ergonomic! |
